I'm trying to get my City of Encinitas CA to educate homeowners who are remodeling about comfort and the opportunities they should not miss. I will link this video. Such a shame to miss the opportunity to get a more comfortable house when remodeling--for pennies on the dollar--since hard to access areas like tight attics and cathedral ceilings become accessible. So thank you!!!

Living in central Texas without a central AC right now is a battle I intend to survive, lol. I've watched about 30-50 videos on attic insulation, and am realizing it's a whole branch of science in itself. And you still managed to fill some gaps in what I've learned. Thanks for the generous information. 🙏👍

It would have been much better had you performed the air leakage measurement of the house before you extracted the blown insulation. This would have provided a much better comparison to what you did and why you say what was there was incorrect.

I know this might sound impractical and out there in left field but couldn't you just put vents in the doors or louvered register vents as an alternative knowing this would prevent rooms from breathing individually but would still let the system flow and function easier without big pressure fluctuations

I have watched and enjoyed many of your videos - just a building science keener myself. But you made a rookie mistake when you attempted to show that you can measure stack effect from totally inside the building. You weren't measuring the pressure differences at the ends of the tubes - that's not how it works. The air inside the tubing is changing in density the same as the air outside of the tubing so the net result is that you could remove both tubes from your manometer and get the same reading - except you had the one tube under the basement door. You were measuring the pressure in the basement across the door. You had closed the door I noticed. If you would have turned the HVAC off your gauge would have went to zero. Probably the HVAC had more returns than supply in the basement and that is what you were measuring. Still love your videos - lets all keep learning together.

The video is labeled installing jumper ducts but no one watched him "Install" jumper ducts. The only thing they saw was a register vent cut into the ceiling. For the ones that don't know, He simply cut roughly a 10x10 register inside the bedroom and a 10x10 register in the hallway and conected the two with duct work to allow the Main return in the house to pull air out of those rooms while the doors were closed. The same thing can be achieved by cutting about 1 1/2 inches off the bottom of the door, Cutting a fancy register in the bottom of the door or above the door. To test this, turn on your Airhandler and crack your bedroom door, hold your hand up to the crack and feel the pressure of the air being drawn. The above methods does the same with the door closed. I hope my comment helped someone understand this poorely made video that left some people scratching their head.

I cannot tell you how helpful your videos have been. This video is about energy efficiency but I’ve been desperate to find a solution to a dusty home causing me and my family health problems. The master bed and bath have it the worst and I couldn’t figure out for the longest time WHY. I spent thousands with different contractors and no resolve. Now I have a plan, that thermal gun is a great idea to see if there’s leakage from the attic going into the master bed and bath. It sits right above the room. thank you so much!

Great information. If you search life span cellulose has the shortest lifespan of all insulations. People also describe it become dust overtime. I try to reblow fiberglass rather than throwing it away if it doesn't have rat poo or other contaminants.

Thank you for putting out this video. This is the 3rd year in a row I am working on a project like this and am still surprised by what I find when you extract the insulation (disconnected bathroom fans, hvac vents disconnected, large penetrations, wasp nests, rodent poo, ect). So important for ice dam prevention. You are next level, i talk with friends of mine who work for insulation companies and they tell me it's industry standard to not do the work right as they make more money on reinstalls.

Amazing the difference between back then and today. Today here in Eastern WA this wouldn't even work because it can get down to the single digits and we're lucky enough to have a governor that's banning gas. Heat pumps are being pushed on people BUT in the middle of winter they don't have heat.

Hey guys, schoolboy question from me. Doesn’t something like this raise concern? Say you have below you have a timber floor, and between the sub floor and downstairs ceiling plasterboard, between the cavity you already have rock wool insulation, and now you are sealing the gaps around the joist-to-plasterboard… Shouldn’t you leave some gaps for airflow?

  • @chrisdixonstudios

It also very clearly shows much less Fiberglass insulation over top of thermometer less dense than cellulose (light penetration). You forgot to mention that fiberglass Far outlasts cellulose like 100 years vs 50. It is very impressive however how well cellulose insulates and is fire retardant, cool! Cellulose also fluffs back better than fiberglass if compressed. Probably most important is the cost of cellulose is only about 30% cost of fiberglass, so boom you win!
